Surgical Technology Program

Curriculum & Program Overview

KCH Surgical Technology Program

Clinical & Graduation Requirements:

The student must complete a minimum of  120 cases to graduate.

The student must complete a minimum of 30 cases in General Surgery: 20 in the first scrub role and 10 in either the first or second role.

The student must complete a minimum of 90 cases in surgical specialties other than general Surgery, with 60 in the first scrub role distributed among at least four specialties.

Clinical rotation of travel to sites is required. Student is responsible for transportation.

The goal of the surgical rotation is to develop an organized, well-rounded, entry-level surgical technologist by applying the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains from the classroom to the clinical setting.

Surgical Specialty Total # of Cases Required Minimum # of First Scrub Cases Required Maximum # of Second Scrub Cases That can be Applied Towards 120 Cases Required
General Surgery 30 20 10
Surgical Specialties 90 60 30
Totals 120 80 40

Clinical Rotations:

Surgical rotation is required for graduation from the Kona Community Hospital Surgical Technology Program. The program begins with skills development in the classroom and lab. After passing the classroom/laboratory practical exam, each student is placed in a clinical rotation. Working with a preceptor, the student will pull cases, set up the operating room, maintain the sterile environment, and gown, glove, and scrub into surgical cases. All students participate in patient care preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively.

Students rotate through several clinical sites, and others may be added in the future.
