Ultrasound Station

Sonography/Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, to produce images of many parts of the body. High-frequency sound waves are passed through the body by a transducer pressed gently against the skin and converted into real-time digital images interpreted by a radiologist. Because it doesn't use radiation, ultrasound is a safe option for imaging during pregnancy.

What to Expect

Patients change into a procedure gown and lie on a table. Our sonographer places a small amount of gel on the skin to allow the transducer to move smoothly and you may feel slight pressure as it’s moved across the area being examined.

Obstetrical (OB) ultrasound exams may involve a transducer inserted into the vaginal canal; if this applies to your exam, the sonographer will explain the process in advance. Staying relaxed and following the sonographer’s instructions helps produce the best possible images for your radiologist to review.

Preparing for Your Visit

Many ultrasound exams require no specific preparation. Some do require guidelines, generally dietary restrictions or drinking water beforehand, which will be reviewed with you when your exam is scheduled.
