Xray Techs

Diagnostic X-Rays

X-rays are a form of radiation, like light or radio waves, that pass through most objects including the body. Once carefully aimed at the area being examined, an x-ray machine produces a small burst of radiation that passes through the body, recording an image on a digital detector. At West Hawaii Region, our technologists use this fast, widely available imaging tool to help diagnose conditions quickly, whether in routine visits or urgent situations.

What to Expect

Depending on the area of interest, you may be positioned on the x-ray table or standing for your exam. Several images may be taken at different angles to best visualize the area. Most general exams take just a few minutes. A radiologist, a physician trained specifically to interpret radiology exams, analyzes the images and sends a signed report to your provider. Results are often available almost immediately. Your doctor may occasionally request a follow-up exam for additional clarity or to monitor a known condition over time.

West Hawaii Region also offers fluoroscopy, a related procedure that uses a continuous x-ray beam to view organs and tissues in motion, often with a contrast agent like barium or iodine. Fluoroscopy procedures include:

  • Esophagram
  • Barium swallow
  • Upper gastrointestinal (GI)
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) test for female infertility
  • Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) test
  • Barium enema
  • Small bowel follow-through (SBFT) test
  • Pain injections

Benefits and Safety

No radiation remains in the body after an x-ray exam and side effects are uncommon at typical diagnostic doses. Special care is always taken to use the lowest radiation dose possible while still producing clear images, following current radiology safety standards. Please let your provider or technologist know if there’s any possibility you’re pregnant.

Preparing for Your Visit

All exams require a provider order. Bring your order and a photo ID when you arrive. Preparation varies by exam; for fluoroscopy procedures in particular, any specific instructions will be reviewed with you at scheduling or provided by your healthcare provider.
