What to Expect
Patients change into a procedure gown and lie on a table. Before starting, our staff places a “coil” over the body part being examined to send and receive radio frequency waves. As the exam begins, the table moves into the magnet and you’ll hear sounds ranging from humming to loud knocking — all normal. You’ll be given earplugs and headphones, and staff can communicate with you throughout via microphone, plus a hand-held device if you need assistance. Some exams require contrast material through a vein in your arm. MRI exams typically take 30–60 minutes, and it’s important to stay as still as possible for the best images.
Preparing for Your Visit
Most MRI exams don’t require dietary restrictions, but due to the strong magnetic field, we’ll carefully screen for any metal objects, loose or implanted, that could pose a safety risk. This will be reviewed with you in detail before your exam. If you experience anxiety or claustrophobia, your physician can prescribe a mild anxiety-relieving medication. Please let staff know if there’s a chance you’re pregnant. While there are no known effects on the fetus, your exam may be modified or scheduled later in pregnancy. Some patients notice temporary ringing in the ears afterward, which resolves quickly.
